Bethesda has announced plans to bring Starfield to PS5 in early April, but there is actually good news for fans on all platforms. On the same date as the PS5 release, a massive free update will be rolling out to all platforms, adding highly-requested features to the game. On top of that, a new story DLC titled Terran Armada is also dropping.
Free Lanes, the major free update for Starfield, introduces full free‑flight within star systems through Cruise Mode, letting players travel between planets without fast‑travel while interacting with their ship as if docked. Players can decorate interiors, use workbenches, talk to crew and rely on autopilot to slow the ship on arrival. Dynamic points of interest now appear during travel, and new encounters can pull players out of Cruise Mode for combat or exploration. Encounter frequency has been increased across the board to make space travel more event‑driven as well.
A major new resource, X‑Tech, underpins expanded customisation. Players can reroll legendary weapon effects, unlock new Tier 4 modifiers and push gear into new Superior and Exceptional quality tiers. Some fully upgraded items become Exotic. New effects include Saboteur for robot‑focused builds, Reckless for high‑risk sniping and Enigmatic for hologram‑based misdirection. A new Upgrade Module slot allows targeted stat boosts, while a Ship Optimisation Terminal lets players enhance shields, engines, grav drives and weapons directly from their ship.
Outposts receive substantial upgrades, including shared storage containers that sync resources across all bases, a new Database menu that consolidates discoveries and recipes, and a customisable Milliwhale pet unlocked through a new quest.
Starborn abilities can now be ranked up without restarting New Game+, and a Quantum Entanglement Device allows players to carry gear into new universes. Other additions include new ship modules such as a stealth‑boosting cloak, expanded planetary POIs, a new elite crew member, the Moon Jumper land vehicle, an asteroid base home, new enemy modifiers, weapon skins and camera options.
As for the new story DLC, Terran Armada, it introduces a faction of ex‑Colony War soldiers who believe themselves the rightful heirs of Earth. The expansion adds a full questline, a morally ambiguous robot companion named Delta and the new Incursion system, which adds repeatable combat scenarios ranging from small skirmishes to large‑scale ship infiltrations. Players can tune Incursion frequency, and some encounters can disrupt grav jumps or pull ships out of Cruise Mode. The DLC also adds Terran ship parts, new grounded‑style weapons and suits, a mini‑bot elite crew member, a pre‑built outpost module and new decorative items.
Both the Terran Armada Story DLC and the Free Lanes update for Starfield will be available on April 7th – the same day that the game launches for PS5.

KitGuru Says: I was a big fan of Starfield even at launch, but I also see why some were let down by the game. Will you be giving Starfield another try once the new update drops?
