Horror series ‘Remothered’ to receive Free* Unreal Engine 5 remasters next year

As we just witnessed with the successful launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, video game remasters can come in a variety of forms. Some, like The Witcher, are offered entirely for free as long as you purchased the game previously. Others are released as paid products with upgrade paths for previous owners. Then there are some remasters which are treated as entirely separate releases – necessitating a whole new purchase. Interestingly, the horror series Remothered is taking its own approach to its newly-announced remasters, offering the upgrade for free, but only during its debut week.

First released back in 2018, Remothered: Tormented Fathers is a 3rd person survival horror experience focused on psychological traumas; ‘realistic puzzles’ and dynamic exploration. Serving as the first part of a trilogy, its sequel ‘Broken Porcelain’ would officially launch a couple years later in 2020.

With the conclusive chapter of this trilogy [Remothered: Red Nun's Legacy] set to arrive on the 27th of October, the team at Stormind Games have announced that a remaster of the first two games is in the works.

Being upgraded from Unreal Engine 4 to UE5, both Remothered 1 and 2 will arrive during Q1 of 2027, bringing with them “improved lighting, sharper detail, and a more cohesive visual atmosphere”. Exact specifics on the improvements were not shared, but the trailers released do look pretty good.

By far the most interesting part of the announcement however is in how these remasters are being released. According to the studio, both Tormented Fathers and Broken Porcelain will be given away for free to all those who own the original versions of these games…but only “during the first seven days following the release of the remastered edition.”

No further specifics were shared, but it is safe to assume that owners will have to manually claim / add the remasters to their library during the first week in order to gain permanent access for free.

It is currently unknown what will become of these remasters after the initial week is up, with the team simply promising that “more details on the free upgrade will be shared closer to launch.”
