Long development cycles have become all-too commonplace in the video games industry, with the typical AAA offering taking around 5 years or so to come to fruition. Beyond Good and Evil 2 however is in a whole league of its own in this regard, with the Ubisoft-published prequel having first been announced all the way back in 2008…with no release date anywhere in sight. Even so, Ubisoft appears to remain committed to the project, as one developer has now confirmed that BG&E2 is still somehow alive.
Taking to Bluesky, Ubisoft Bordeaux’s Rik Godwin offered what they described as an “odd sort of non-announcement”, revealing that “for the past few months I've been working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 in a support/consultant role. I am allowed to say this, I checked”. While in and of itself not a crazy announcement, this does mark the latest evidence that the long-in-development prequel has yet to be cancelled.
For context, Beyond Good and Evil 2 was first announced back in 2008 – although the game’s proper unveiling wouldn't come until almost a decade later in 2017. Since its re-reveal however, the project has continued to remain elusive, eventually breaking the record for the longest game in development (taking the crown from the infamous Duke Nukem Forever).
Despite this, Ubisoft appears committed to seeing the project through, no matter what it takes, with the game’s director claiming back in February that Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains in active development.
Similarly, after more than a decade in development, Ubisoft did eventually manage to get one of its other long-awaited projects past the finish line, with the middling Skull & Bones eventually arriving in 2024 despite every opportunity for it to be cancelled.
Ubisoft is of course more than willing to abandon projects that aren't working out, most recently cancelling spin-offs for both Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed.
Whether it is a matter of sunk-cost-fallacy, or simply a genuine belief in the project, Beyond Good and Evil 2 (like Skull & Bones before it) will hopefully eventually be released. Whether it will be worth the wait however, we will have to see.
