Capcom plans on “re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently” following Onimusha’s success

For a solid generation or so, Capcom remained primarily focused on maintaining and growing its suite of major IPs such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. That said, as a publisher, Capcom is home to countless other franchises – many of which have been underrepresented in recent years. In the wake of the immediate success of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Capcom have expressed great interest in “re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently.”

Representing the first new proper entry in two decades, Onimusha: Way of the Sword officially launched late last week to immediate success, achieving aggregate scores inline with their other recent success ‘Pragmata’ – while outpacing it sales-wise (selling 1 million copies in its first day compared to 2 days for Pragmata).

Not only is this a major achievement in and of itself (especially given that there has not been a new entry since 2006), but Way of the Sword already accounts for 10% of the franchise’s lifetime sales.

As part of their press release celebrating this milestone, Capcom revealed that they plan to bring back many of their other dormant IPs, writing: “In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including [Onimusha].”

As mentioned, while Capcom is known best nowadays for a select few IPs such as Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter, the publisher’s full suite of franchises is vast and includes all sorts from Mega Man to Ace Attorney; Dino Crisis to Devil May Cry; Lost Planet to Final Fight and countless others.

Any and all of these are ripe for a revival (except for Mega Man which is set to receive a new entry next year), and so it will be interesting to see how Capcom proceeds from here.
