Fallout 76 to get “Gen 9 boost” update next month

Since its initial launch back in 2018, Fallout 76 has seen countless updates, bringing in new content, microtransactions and performance improvements. Unlike Bethesda’s other offerings however, Fallout 76 never received a native current-gen upgrade. Following months of teasers, BGS have now confirmed that FO76 will receive its “gen 9 boost” next month.

Taking to its blog to make the announcement, the Fallout 76 team unveiled ‘The Slasher’ – a new update set to drop on the 15th of September.

While the update’s namesake revolves around a new “frightening experience that unravels over the weeks spanning our Fall updates” by far the biggest part of the update comes with its current-gen console support, writing:

“Along with this content, our Gen 9 boost that benefits players on XBOX Series S/X, PS5, and older consoles will arrive. All console players will enjoy better performance, stability, and visual fidelity. This upgrade also affords our team the opportunity to optimize each platform individually down the road.”

Fallout 76 Current-gen

Based on the use of the phrase ‘Gen 9 boost', many feared that this may be a simple update as opposed to a native PS5 and Series X/S. Fortunately, this does not seem to be the case, with previous patch notes confirming the following:

  • 60 FPS target
  • Improved draw distances
  • Improved shadows
  • VRR support
  • Increased resolutions

Though Fallout 76 was previously updated to support 60fps on current-gen consoles, this seems to be a far more comprehensive update which should allow for – as stated by Bethesda themselves – “the opportunity to optimize each platform individually down the road.”
