Gears of War E-Day review embargo will be lifted this Thursday

Gears of War E-Day is an important release for Microsoft, not only due to it being one of the console maker’s ‘big 3’ franchises, but also thanks to the fact that it marks the first Xbox-published title to be console-exclusive in quite some time. While the game itself is set to launch on the 6th of October, publications already have their hands on the game – with reviews officially going live in just a couple days’ time.

As confirmed by multiple reviewers, the official embargo for Microsoft’s upcoming Gears of War: E-Day will be lifted on the 1st of October at 2PM UK Time, at which point fans will be flooded with dozens of impressions from across the industry.

Having reviews go live almost a week out from launch is often seen as a sign of confidence on the part of the publisher, with Microsoft seemingly hopeful that consensus on E-Day will be quite high; potentially leading to a wave of additional pre-orders.

Of course, this doesn’t always work in a game’s favour. Most recently, Insomniac’s Wolverine also went live with its reviews 5 days ahead of the game’s launch; amassing an aggregate score of 76 while flooding the discourse with talk of auto-completing QTEs, ‘fart gas’ and other somewhat disingenuous critiques – feeding into a console war which some still hold onto.

As mentioned, Gears of War E-Day has a lot riding on it, being the first new mainline entry for the series in 7 years – a series which peaked critically with its very first game back in 2006 (with each subsequent sequel scoring progressively lower).

So far, early impressions of the game have been positive. That said, we will have to wait and see what the full critical consensus is when the review embargo is officially lifted the day after tomorrow.
