Kojima Productions officially responds to Physint / Sony split

In an unexpected announcement earlier this month, Sony confirmed that it would be parting ways with Kojima Productions, meaning the console maker would no longer be publishing the ‘espionage-action’ title Physint. While the project was ultimately ‘saved’ by Xbox, there has been a great deal of discourse subsequently surrounding the circumstances of Sony’s decision and their relationship with Kojima. In an effort to clarify the situation, Kojima Productions have released another statement.

Following the official announcement from Sony that they would no longer be going ahead with the production of Physint, reports surfaced, giving some insight into the entire situation.

Hideo Kojima himself would later release his own statement, confirming that “development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward” thanks to a new partnership with Xbox.

Since then, there has been plenty of discourse among fans as to how this has impacted the studio’s relationship with Sony / PlayStation. Taking to Twitter to ‘clarify’ things, the official Kojima Productions have now released a new statement, writing: “You may have seen a recent article that mentions Kojima Productions, speculating on the reasons for the change in publishing partners for Physint.”

They continued, “Normally, we would not comment on unsubstantiated speculation on the internet, but these aspersions around our relationship with PlayStation, the commercial performance of the Death Stranding franchise, and the broader production planning and investment for Physint, have reached beyond the studio and have touched our fans, our creative partners, and colleagues we have worked alongside with for three decades.”

According to the studio “None of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source and as such we encourage you to take them with a dose of scepticism,” adding that “this was a serious situation for the studio with a range of potentially significant implications. While we recognise that the article may have caused alarm, we want to reassure you all, for the record: that the studio is in a healthy, profitable state, development for Physint continues to move forward with Xbox, and our relationship with PlayStation remains strong.”

While not directly stated, the studio is likely referring to a piece by known industry insider Jason Schreier – though the report then led to a great deal of further speculation across the board.

Alongside this statement, Kojima himself partook in an interview with the publication The Washington Post, giving a more candid retelling of the events. The full report can be found HERE.
