Payday 2 to receive massive update, including Engine overhaul

Years on from its release, Payday 3 continues to exist under the shadow of its predecessor, with 2013’s Payday 2 seeing higher player numbers owing to a variety of factors. Perhaps one of its biggest downsides with the decade-old title is in its age, with the game’s technical side of things having been left behind. As part of their efforts to continue supporting the previous (and more-successful) game however, the team at Starbreeze have announced that Payday 2 will soon receive a major engine upgrade.

Taking to their Steam page to make the announcement, the team at Sidetrack Games (who have partnered with Starbreeze to keep Payday 2 updated) revealed that a major engine upgrade is on its way, writing:

“It is time to announce the next update coming for the game, and it's quite a big one…On June 30, Steam players can join the Open Beta and get hands-on with the all-new Diesel 3.0 engine, packed with performance improvements, file size reduction, plenty of changes to explore and the long awaited 64-Bit architecture.”

Going into some more specifics, the list of improvements coming is said to be as follows:

  • Official 64bit support
  • Upgrade from DX9 to DX11 rendering
  • Faster load times (on SSDs)
  • 6 character lobby codes
  • Massively reduced file size (going from roughly 80GB to 32GB)
  • And more…

This latest announcement is a big deal for a number of reasons. Unlike Payday 2 and 1 (which use the aforementioned Diesel Engine), Payday 3 switched over to Unreal Engine 4. This not only led to issues with the devs needing to familiarise themselves with the engine, but it also led to a notably different feeling game – from movement to gunplay and more.

Given this, the fact that the Diesel Engine is being updated to a version 3.0 will not only benefit Payday 2, but could allow for a return to form with any future Payday releases.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the update? Are you surprised that they’re upgrading the engine? Will Payday 3 ever manage to match its predecessor? Let us know down below.
