One of the big surprise moments from Microsoft’s recent Xbox Games Showcase was the official announcement that Toys For Bob are working on a brand new Spyro entry – the first one in almost two decades. With the cat now out of the bag, the team at Toys For Bob have been sharing some behind-the-scenes stats and facts, revealing that 2018’s Reignited Trilogy Remake has sold over 11 million copies.
In an interview with the publication GamesRadar+, Toys For Bob studio head Paul Yan and associate creative director Lou Studdert were asked why they chose to partner with Microsoft to develop a brand new Spyro game – even after going independent.
According to Studdert: “Spyro has kind of a deep place in our studio's heart. We've always admired that kind of small but mighty underdog story of the character that's taking on these overwhelming odds, you know, we see ourselves in that a little bit, and honestly, it just was a no-brainer.”
Going into greater specifics, the director continued, “since we made Reignited, we have had the hope to take him further,” with studio head Yan adding:
“Going independent was taking on massive, massive risk, right? It's taking a bet on ourselves. We knew coming out of Reignited – that title sold over 11 million copies, so there's an audience that woke up to show up for that series […] When we came up to Xbox and said, listen, here's our plan, we said, ‘look, there's a community, it's loud and consistent, they know what they want, you're here to make this game, what else do you need, let's get this thing going.”
For years now, Microsoft has shied away from sharing concrete sales data for its games, and so having official confirmation of Spyro: The Reignited Trilogy’s success is welcome to see.
Whether the upcoming ‘A Realm Beyond’ will manage to reach similar figures, we will have to wait and see, but if Crash Bandicoot 4 is anything to go by, then expect quite a significant fall-off when compared to the remake.
KitGuru says: Are you excited for Spyro: A Realm Beyond? How different do you expect it to be compared to the trilogy? Will the sequel ever hit 10 million copies sold? Let us know your thoughts down below.
