One of the most exciting acquisitions made by Sony during its spending spree was the announcement that they had purchased BluePoint Games. Known for producing excellent and pretty faithful remakes, the studio would unfortunately be shut down by Sony before being able to ship their first project under the company. While fans were of course disappointed by the news, Shadow of the Colossus creator Fumito Ueda was equally as saddened, revealing that he had hoped to work with BluePoint on a remake of the PS2 classic ICO.
In an interview with IGN, Fumito Ueda – the director behind many PlayStation classics including ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian – was asked for his take on Sony’s closure of BluePoint Games earlier this year.
According to Ueda: “we had no heads-up. We're not directly in relation with any project, so I heard about it at the same time you guys probably did in the news, and it was disappointing and sad to hear.”
While nothing was in the works, the creator revealed that he had hoped to collab with BluePoint at some point, stating: “I would have hoped that maybe in the future there could be a chance to work with them on something. So yeah, it's very sad to hear the news.”
When pushed for specifics on what sort of project he envisioned, Ueda reportedly ‘smiled’ and simply said “Maybe ICO.”
For the uninitiated, ICO was a PlayStation 2 classic from 2001. The first project from Ueda as director, this bleak and contemplative title received tons of accolades and went on to inspire many famed game creators including Zelda’s Eiji Aonuma, Hideo Kojima and others.
Ueda’s follow-up project – Shadow of the Colossus – was equally as revered, going on to receive a comprehensive remake by BluePoint Games themselves back in 2018. Given this relationship, it would have made sense for the studio to eventually tackle ICO. Unfortunately, this will never come to be.
