Stellar Blade director would love to work on Bayonetta if given the chance

In a little over a month’s time, Stellar Blade will finally be making its way over to the Nintendo Switch 2, bringing with it a new crossover skin in the style of PlatinumGames’ iconic heroine Bayonetta. While currently limited to a cosmetic collab, studio ShiftUp’s CEO revealed that he would love to work on a full Bayonetta game if given the chance, claiming the series to be in his top 3 of all time.

Taking part in an interview with the Japanese publication Famitsu (and translated by NintendoWire), Platinum Games CEO Atsushi Inana and ShiftUp CEO Kim Hyung-tae sat down to discuss the upcoming collab coming with the Switch 2 launch of Stellar Blade.

Describing his reverence for the series, Kim revealed that Bayonetta is one of his top 3 favourite games of all time, claiming: “This game is like a huge gift in my life, so I hope it continues for a long time. Bayonetta 10! I hope they’ll make it up to.”

Funnily enough, Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya claimed back in 2022 that he would want to make a total of 9 entries in the series. Of course, Kamiya would later depart PlatinumGames, leaving the fate of the franchise somewhat in flux.

While pitched as a joke, Kim Hyung-tae expressed a desire to work on more than just the aforementioned crossover costume, telling Platinum’s CEO “please let me design the characters for the next Bayonetta game,” adding that “If PlatinumGames would make a desk for me, I’d come every day.”

Though Stellar Blade and Bayonetta are quite different gameplay-wise, there is a level of shared DNA between the two. Plus, given that the series appears to be genuinely precious to Kim, a 4th entry developed by ShiftUp and PlatinumGames could actually work. Of course, SEGA owns the rights to the IP, and so the decision ultimately remains in their hands.
