Void Bastards and Yooka-Laylee are free on the EGS

Each week, the Epic Games Store offers a couple of games for free. This week, those with an Epic Games account can get their hands on the first-person rogue-like shooter Void Bastards, as well as the throwback 3D collectathon platformer Yooka-Laylee. Both games are available to purchase and download for free right now.

Void Bastards is a sci-fi, System Shock inspired first-person shooter with rogue-like elements which has you “lead the rag-tag Void Bastards out of the Sargasso Nebula. You make the decisions: where to go, what to do and who to fight. And then you must carry out that strategy in the face of strange and terrible enemies.”

The game received a positive reception upon its initial release in 2019, owing to the game’s fun gameplay and ‘absurd’ humour.

Yooka-Laylee is a 3D collectathon platformer developed by Playtonic who are composed of former Rare developers. Inspired by early 3D platformers such as Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, Yooka Laylee has you “Explore huge, beautiful worlds, meet (and beat) an unforgettable cast of characters and horde a vault-load of shiny collectibles as buddy-duo Yooka (the green one) and Laylee (the wisecracking bat with the big nose) embark on an epic adventure to thwart corporate creep Capital B and his devious scheme to absorb all the world’s books… and convert them into pure profit!”

Though the game received a mixed reception at launch, due to some of the quirks of older-styled 3D games, those who are fans of the genre will enjoy this reinvention of the collectathon genre.

Both Yooka-Laylee and Void Bastards are available to purchase and download for free from now until the 26th of August at 4pm, at which point they will be replaced by the resource management puzzler Automachef.
