Phison, Micron and AMD team up to usher in PCIe 5.0 generation of SSDs

We'll be swiftly moving on to PCIe 5.0 this year and we can expect the first new SSDs fairly soon. This week at Computex, Phison announced a new collaboration with AMD and Micron to build a PCIe Gen 5 ecosystem. On Phison's end, this will include the new PS5026-E26 SSD controller, which will enable nearly two times the performance compared to the previous generation.

With PCIe 4.0, we saw M.2 SSD speeds leap all the way up to 7,000 MB/s and with PCIe Gen 5, we'll be making another leap. It is expected that the leading PCIe 5.0 SSDs will have read speeds up to 13,000 MB/s.

Phison will be supplying the SSD controller, and Micron will be looking to release new PCIe Gen 5 SSDs under the Crucial brand. AMD will be looking to make platform improvements with its upcoming AM5 motherboards, including new features like Smart Access Storage to enable even greater performance.

While at Computex 2022, Phison also has other new products to show off, including the first PCIe Gen4 BGA SSD using the PS5021-E21T controller, a new DRAM-less PCIe Gen4 solution, new tech for data centres and enterprise, as well as the world’s first PCIe 5.0 Redriver IC certified by PCI-SIG.
