Explosion at factory causes concerns for Apple production

An explosion yesterday at a chinese factory may cause problems for iPad production over the coming months. It occurred at a plant which belonged to Pegatron subsidiary Riteng in Shanghai, and up to 61 people are injured, according to a report on Reuters. 23 of those people needed hospital attention and machinery was also damaged.

Pegatron Chief Financial Officer Charles Lin told Reuters “The factory has not started operations yet. Part of the facility is still under pre-operation inspection and part is running trial production.”

This explosion could cause problems for production of the iPad 2 and upcoming versions of the tablet. The plant was scheduled to produce back panels for the iPad 2, according to reports in China. Operations will be stopped until a city government investigation is given, with subsequent approval.

Kitguru says: This explosion is the second this year to cause problems for Apple, after Foxconn were rocked with a similar tragedy earlier this year which killed two people and injured sixteen.
