Over the years, we’ve seen various franchises paying homage to its fans through the implementation of certain figures’ likenesses into the games, whether it be the inclusion of Miis in Mario Kart titles or ‘Skyrim Grandma’ Shirley Curry in the upcoming Elder Scrolls VI. Sony appears to be taking this concept to the next level, officially announcing their Playerbase program – “bringing PlayStation’s biggest fans into blockbuster PlayStation Studios games.”
Making the surprise announcement on the PlayStation Blog, the VP of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment ‘Isabelle Tomatis’ wrote:
“Today, we’re excited to offer an opportunity to bring some of our devoted PlayStation fans even closer to the PlayStation experience. We’re introducing ‘The Playerbase’, a unique opportunity for PlayStation’s biggest fans to step into some of the biggest game worlds by having their likeness scanned and appear within a PlayStation game.”
Available in ‘select markets’ across America; Europe; Asia; South Africa and Australia, the program will be kicking off in partnership with Gran Turismo 7 followed by “additional PlayStation Studios titles in the near future.”
Full details on the application process can be found HERE, including PlayStation account requirements, the interview process and more.
While likely to be little more than a marketing gimmick, The Playerbase is an interesting concept, and one which could lead to a greater sense of community. It will be curious to see how the program evolves over time.
