Red Dead Redemption is getting a current-gen PS5 physical release

For well over a decade Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 1 was locked to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, with the title not receiving any re-releases until its 8th-gen port back in 2023. Since then, RDR1 has found its way onto pretty much all platforms including mobile devices. Giving fans yet another opportunity to purchase Red Dead Redemption, a native current-gen physical release is seemingly on its way.

The official listing for the physical version of Red Dead Redemption 1 was recently updated on Amazon to include a new platform: PS5. With a launch date set for the 4th of May, this upcoming release should include all of the updated data on disc (though no specifics have been shared as of now).

As mentioned, the original Red Dead Redemption was locked to the PS3 and Xbox 360 since its release back in 2010. It wasn’t until 2023 that the title would receive an official remaster/re-release for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch (followed by its arrival on PC).

Xbox users were already able to play the game through backwards compatibility with a boost to resolution and so it would not get a native port until late last year when the title arrived on a plethora of platforms including PS5, Switch 2 and even mobile devices.

While it is good to see a native current-gen physical release being made (for the sake of preservation if nothing else), the lack of any news regarding a next-gen update for its sequel Red Dead Redemption 2 still hurts.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this upcoming release? Could Rockstar finally be moving on to a current-gen RDR2 remaster next with the first game being sufficiently milked? Let us know down below.
