Final Fantasy Resonance continues to impress with new trailer

While I've never been a huge fan of pixel-based graphics, Square Enix changed that for me when it launched HD-2D with Octopath Traveler. Now, Square Enix is finally bringing its HD-2D engine to Final Fantasy, giving us a true classic-style RPG in the form of Final Fantasy Resonance.

In a new trailer for the game released this week, we get a closer look at what to expect, showing off turn-based combat, key characters and new mechanics:

Key party members for Final Fantasy Resonance include Rain, Lasswell, Lid and Nichol. The story begins with Rain investigating a disturbance at the Earth Shrine, leading to the shattering of the Earth Crystal and a wider conflict that threatens the remaining crystals across Lapis.

Final Fantasy Resonance is a full single‑player RPG with no gacha mechanics or microtransactions, reimagining Brave Exvius’s opening arc with new cinematics and fully voiced characters. The game features traditional turn‑based combat enhanced with modern presentation, including dynamic camera work and HD‑2D environments. Classic Final Fantasy elements return as well, such as espers, airships, chocobos and cactars — complete with their iconic 1000 Needles attack.

Final Fantasy Resonance is set to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC on the 22nd of October.

KitGuru Says: I have played every single HD-2D game to date. These classic style games aren't necessarily for everyone, but if you've been craving a return to turn-based Final Fantasy, this will be the game to pick up.
