Helldivers film delayed to 2028 following latest recast

Back during CES 2025, Sony announced that they would be developing a live-action film adaptation of their hit co-op shooter Helldivers II. A little over a year later, it was reported that Aquaman’s Jason Momoa would be starring in the production, with an official release date penned for November 2027. This was ultimately short-lived, with Momoa being replaced by Alan Ritchson. Seemingly as a result of this shake-up, the Helldivers film has now been pushed back to 2028.

As reported by publication The Wrap, Sony Pictures offered an update on many of their upcoming film projects, confirming that their Helldivers film will no longer make its initial premiere date.

Previously announced to be releasing on the 10th of November 2027, the adaptation is now slated to arrive 7 months later on the 9th of June 2028. No reason was given for the delay, although they did confirm that Alan Ritchson will be starring in the film (following talks from last month).

Aside from its cast and director, we still know very little about the Helldivers adaptation. As a game, Helldivers II has you playing as disposable grunts in an unending war, with no single character taking the spotlight. Whether the film will take a similar route, or will try to elevate Ritchson’s character to something greater, remains to be seen.

All that said, the production pipeline of a film is entirely different to that of a video game, and so it remains unknown how far along in the process Sony Pictures is right now. We will have to wait and see.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the new casting choice? Are you at all interested in a Helldivers film? Would you rather it be a standard action flick, or more of a Starship Troopers styled satire? Let us know down below.
