AMD hardware now powers the world’s fastest supercomputer

Last year, after launching the new MI250X multi-die GPU, AMD revealed plans to power the first supercomputer to break the exascale barrier. Now six months later, that milestone has been achieved, with AMD's 3rd Gen EPYC processors and MI250X powering the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's ‘Frontier' supercomputer.

The Frontier supercomputer is now ranked as the number one system across both the Top500 and Green500. The system is capable of 1.102 exaflops of performance and 62.68 gigaflops/watt power efficiency. This makes the Frontier the fastest and most efficient supercomputer in the world today.

The Frontier isn't the only supercomputer packing AMD hardware. Currently, half of the top ten fastest supercomputers use AMD, including the first-place and third-place fastest systems. The third-place system is CDC's LUMI supercomputer, which is capable of 152 petaflops of performance and 51.63 gigaflops/watt power efficiency. The Adastra supercomputer also uses AMD hardware and is placed at No. 10 on the Top500 and No.4 on the Green500 lists.

AMD will be sharing more about its HPC efforts during ISC 2022, which takes place this week.
