Survey finds that 74% of Netflix subscribers would cancel over ads

While Netflix might be the largest paid-for streaming service around these days, they can only get away with so much and according to a survey released this week, for most Netflix subscribers, the line is drawn at showing ads. Apparently, around 74 percent of subscribers would rather cancel than be forced to see ads on Netflix.

While 74 percent of those who took part wouldn't want ads anywhere near Netflix, 90 percent of them would also put their money down and pay a bit more each months to help support the advertisement free model. Out of those people that would rather see a price hike, 57 percent would be willing to pay up to $2 extra a month, 22 percent would go as high as $3.

The survey was conducted by allflicks and is based on answers from 1200 US-based respondents, so the figures are still based on a fairly small sample of the Netflix customer base. People may have different answers in other parts of the world given how dramatically Netflix's library of content can vary between countries.

After going live with the survey, it did hit Reddit, where plenty of others can be found saying they would probably rather cancel their Netflix subscriptions than see ads.

KitGuru Says: This survey does bring up an interesting point of discussion. A lot of those outside of the US in particular are already riled up when it comes to Netflix due to the VPN ban but if ads also came into play, I can't imagine many people would be pleased. Would you unsubscribe from Netflix if ads started playing on the service? Would you rather pay a hire tier subscription to avoid them or would you just cancel outright?

  1. If I pay for a service, I expect there to be no ads. If there suddenly is, I will outright cancel and never look back.

  2. Already forced to torrent a bit thanks to VPN block but if Ads start appearing then i’ll cancel.

  3. I haven’t watched a television since 2011 because I don’t like advertisement. I get around it mostly on computer and mobile but I shy away from most that would advertise to me while using my time to do so. Static ads are fine to a point. I don’t like them but I never spend a considerable amount of time on them. I periodically sub to Netflix and I currently am not now. I just don’t watch a lot of paid content. I’d stand firm with not subbing to Netflix if they started showing video ads. I got rid of TV because of ads and I am not hopping back to it. I’ll go to my brothers house where he has a TV on and he watches up to 15 commercials before shows return, fuck that.

  4. Forced? What, are they putting a gun to your children or something?
