Nintendo 3DS sells 400,000: strong launch

Nintendo will be pleased that their 3DS launch has been so strong. reports are filtering in that they have sold 400,000 units in the first week of release.

While many have commented that the DS was a ‘bigger’ seller, it is worth bearing in mind that the 3DS is priced $100 higher, and sales from the 3DS will net Nintendo a higher revenue compared to the DS.

NPD also reported that the number of Nintendo 3DS games sold was higher compared to the sales of Nintendo DS games. The top Nintendo 3DS game so far is “Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition” from Capcom.

Charlie Scibetta from Nintendo said that DS and 3DS sales have been strong for the whole month which is a good indication that portable gaming in 2011 is very strong, even if desktop PC hardware and gaming sales are lacking.

Nintendo have also said that an update to the 3DS is coming which will let users get access to Nintendo eShop. It should also allow DSiWare games to be transferred into the Nintendo 3DS from the DSi as well as the DSi XL units, which may further boost Nintendo 3DS sales.

KitGuru says: NPD also documented an increase in hardware sales of the PS3, PsP and Xbox 360.

I think they will have a hard time maintaining these sales as the device is very expensive compared to other nintendo devices that hit the market in recent year.
