Intel’s next generation Xeon platform could support CPUs with up to 500W TDP

More details about the Intel Birch Stream platform (aka Avenue City RP) have come to light in a new report. As per the source, the upcoming Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest CPUs will come with numerous improvements over its predecessor, including support for DDR5-6400 memory and up to 500W TDP.

According to the slides shared by Yuuki_Ans, the Avenue City RP platform is the name of the validation platform of Birch Stream (successor of Eagle Stream). Packing a 20-layer PCB design with a 16.7×20-inch form factor, the reference board will work as the foundation for the next-gen Granite Rapids (GNR) and Sapphire Forest (SRF-AP) series.

Based on the LGA-7529 socket, the new platform will support CPUs with up to 500W TDPs and feature 12x DDR5 memory channels with native support for DDR5-6400 memory (1SPC/1DPC configuration). Moreover, next-gen Xeon CPUs will feature self-boot support. Lastly, the slide also suggests that there will be 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes per CPU socket, corroborating previous rumours.

Intel stated previously that Granite Rapids would feature P-cores, but Sapphire Forest would solely pack E-cores, making them the first Xeon chips using only “small” cores. The next generation of Intel Xeon processors is expected to be based on the Intel 3 process node and launch sometime in 2024.

KitGuru says: If the current-gen W9-3495X “Sapphire Rapids” Xeon processor with a 350W TDP (max 420W) can consume close to 1900W when overclocked, systems powered by upcoming Xeon processors with a 500W TDP should be able to break the 2000W barrier when pushed to the limit.
