MSI to issue BIOS update to fix Intel Skylake freezing bug

Earlier this week, news came to light that there is a bug with Intel's Skylake processors, causing the CPU to freeze during hard-working/complex scenarios while running certain applications like Prime95. This isn't something that day-to-day users or even gamers should expect to face but still, it is an issue that needs fixing.

Fortunately, if you happen to be using an MSI motherboard, the company has had its engineers cook up a new BIOS update that fixes this problem on Z170 motherboards.

Intel

Right now, the BIOS update is available for the MSI Z170A Gaming M7 and the XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboards but the rest of MSI's line-up will follow suit soon. At the time of writing, these BIOS updates are in beta and can be found for the two currently supported motherboards, HERE. Obviously, if you don't know what you're doing, then you are better off not touching this.

A final update will be put on the MSI website shortly we have been informed.

KitGuru Says:  This Intel Skylake bug has caused quite a stir this week though unless you are running applications designed to stress the CPU, like Prime95, you were unlikely to come across it at all. Fortunately for those who are worried, it looks like BIOS updates will soon be available to completely fix the problem.

  1. Nope. I get freezes. You can hear a faint beep beep beep from the mobo. Just now it happened.
Heaps of chrome tabs, torrent etc is enough to do it. Irregular though and has only happened twice. Using an ASUS Maximus Impact VIII with an i7 6700k

  4. I use the 6700K i7 and the gaming m7 board. So, I have this issue where this system I built just locks up. Hard freeze, can’t do anything. Happens before anything can go into the event log (or there’s nothing to go in, not sure which), no idea what’s causing it. The temps are all fine, the voltage is fine, it’s running stock. So far the only game I have installed is WoW, and it freezes playing that. Just locks up, screens keep the same picture when it froze, sound repeats itself rapidly at the point of failure, etc…

Could this be related to this skylake issue? I literally have no idea what else might be causing it. I know it’s probably a long shot posting asking here, but yeah.

  5. hey i got the same problem in wow. did you fix it ?
