GeForce RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6X GPUs are slightly faster than GDDR6 models

We've known about Nvidia's GDDR6X RTX 3060 Ti for a while now, but due to limited availability, the latest revision has not seen much public testing. That is starting to change, with one new review arriving, revealing a small performance bump over the original RTX 3060 Ti with GDDR6 memory.

The team over at ITHardware (via VideoCardz) was able to test a KFA2 GeForce RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6X 1-Click OC Plus, which allowed it to compare against an Asus GeForce RTX 3060 Ti TUF Gaming (based on the standard model), as well as other cards, including RTX 30 and Radeon RX 6000 series cards. As a reminder, both the GDDR6 and GDDR6X versions of the RTX 3060 Ti have the same specs, except the memory (14Gbps vs 19Gbps). In this case, however, both cards are factory-overclocked, with the Asus card having higher clock speeds (1755MHz) than the KFA2 card (1665MHz).

Despite the higher clock speed, the KFA2 is still faster than the Asus card, most likely due to the GDDR6X it uses. The difference may only be a mere 2%, but pushing the KFA2 to the same clock speeds as the Asus TUF Gaming card would get us something closer to 5%. Still, considering it consumes 225W of power (+25W than the GDDR6 model and +5W than the RTX 3070), these new cards don't seem particularly efficient.

Although you can't increase the GPU's core voltage, the reviewer still tried to overclock the GPU. After some trial and error, it was possible to stabilise the card at 1815MHZ (+150MHz), with the memory being pushed to 20.2Gbps (+1200MHz). Overall, performance improved by about 5%.

KitGuru says: The RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6X may not bring the performance improvement some were expecting. Still, considering it's supposed to cost the same as the GDDR6 models, at least you're guaranteed to get a bit more for your money.
