eVGA GTX 460 1GB Superclocked SLI review

The GTX460 is a kick ass card and one of our favourites at KitGuru. In SLI it can power through all the modern gaming engines at the highest settings and resolutions. The icing on the cake is that two cards don't generate excessive amounts of heat or noise.

The eVGA Superclocked cards are very well built and we really like the plain, understated black design which has a certain elegance when compared with the mismatch of gaudy stickers adorning many graphics cards today.

In such a competitive market it all boils down to the price and this is when nVidia (and eVGA in this case) walk away with the top awards. The 460 was initially created to target the HD5830, but in reality when overclocked it gives the HD5850 a run for its money. The overclocked eVGA cards on test today are £180 inc vat at Scan, while many HD5850's are still retailing for £20-£40 more. Unless you are a loyalist ATI fan then the GTX460 is very hard to ignore – and this is how nVidia are playing it. They keep dropping the price which is making the GTX460 an almost unmissable bargain. There is no need to contemplate the GTX465 or GTX470, these are the cards to buy.

In SLI, the eVGA GTX460 Superclocked cards give performance levels close to the GTX480 while generating less heat, requiring less power and producing less noise, even when combined. If I was building a high performance gaming system myself today then the eVGA GTX460 SC 1GB cards in SLI would be right at the top of my list. Even if I couldn't afford two right away, its always an option to upgrade later.

Edit: Just after publication UK store SCAN dropped the price of the eVGA SC GTX460 to £163.87 inc vat making the card even better value !

KitGuru says: The GTX 460 really is top of the mid market pile … fantastic performance levels with the minimum amount of fuss.
