The MSI MAG A1200PLS has proven itself to be a very capable power supply throughout our testing. Build quality is excellent, both internally and externally, and we like the subtle coloured accents which help it stand out without being over the top. More importantly, MSI has added a couple of genuinely useful safety features. GPU Safeguard monitors the 12V-2×6 connector for abnormal current conditions and alerts the user if a problem is detected, while Fan Safeguard sounds an alarm if the cooling fan fails, helping to prevent the unit from overheating.
From a technical standpoint, the MAG A1200PLS performed well across the board. Load regulation is respectable, the unit handled our cross-load testing without issue, and ripple suppression remained comfortably within the ATX specification at every load level. While the ripple results are not class-leading, they are more than good enough and the power supply remained completely stable throughout our testing.
The one area where I feel MSI and CWT could have gone a step further is capacitor selection. The primary TEAPO capacitor is a perfectly respectable 105°C component and many people will argue that it is more than adequate. Personally, however, if I were spending around £180 on a 1200W Platinum-rated power supply, I would expect to see Japanese capacitors from manufacturers such as Nippon Chemi-Con, Nichicon or Rubycon used throughout. It would have elevated what is already a very competent design.
That said, I was particularly impressed by the Fluid Dynamic Bearing fan and its tuning. The fan profile is conservative, keeping noise levels impressively low without allowing temperatures to climb excessively, even when the unit is delivering over 1,000W.
