Thermaltake TR2 800W Power Supply review

The Thermaltake TR2 800W is a rather bland looking power supply, although the plain black appearance will suit many system builds. The finish is competently handled, although it will regularly need cleaning as it attracts fingerprints easily. A textured matt finish would have worked better.

Thermaltake have ensured that all the cables are long, at 500mm minimum length. This is ideal for a system build in a large chassis, but as it isn't a modular design, routing will take a little more effort.

Technically, the internal design is solid with capable load regulation and it dealt well with our cross loading tests. Ripple suppression is far from class leading, with the +12V output peaking at 70mV and the +3.3V peaking at 35mV. To be fair, these are well within the rated tolerance parameters and won't cause any issues for the end user … however we have seen superior results from similar supplies this year. On a more positive note, overall efficiency is strong, delivering better results than we expected.

Acoustically, the supply could have been improved, as the fan quickly spins up under load to compensate for rising temperatures. The tiny heatsinks may be part of the problem as they are directly connected to the fan speed control system.

The price is a deciding factor for a potential customer, and currently it can be bought for around £72 inc vat in the United Kingdom, which is extremely competitive, offering high value for money. The product is covered under warranty for 3 years in Europe and 5 years in the US.

Pros:

  • Subdued appearance will suit many systems.
  • Cables are long and sleeved.
  • competent overall design.
  • efficiency is excellent.

Cons:

  • Can get loud under higher load.
  • noise suppression could be better.
  • cable routing is more difficult as it isn't a modular design.

Kitguru says: A solid all round design at a bargain price.
