PCI-SIG confirms Samsung is working on a 990 Pro PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSD

With more platforms supporting PCIe 5.0 coming later this year, SSD manufacturers have been developing new storage solutions to take full advantage of the new standard. Some manufacturers have already announced they're working on PCIe 5.0 SSDs, but Samsung has been quiet so far. However, a list published by PCI-SIG suggests the company is working on a 990 Pro PCIe 5.0 SSD.

Samsung SSDs are pretty popular amongst PC builders, often considered the best by many, especially the Pro variants. Based on their success, it's only reasonable to expect Samsung to launch new SSDs supporting the PCIe 5.0 standard. For now, we still don't know much about any of them, but PCI-SIG has recently confirmed that a 990 Pro is in the works.

The table listing the SSD shows it uses an M.2 interface but doesn't specify the form factor. However, we can assume it will keep using the standard 2280 size. The other Samsung PCIe 5.0 SSDs listed in the table include the now available PM1743 U.2 SSD and the yet unreleased PM1743 U.3 and PM1743 E3.S SSDs.

At the moment, Intel already has some motherboards supporting the standard. AMD will launch its first PCIe 5.0-supported motherboards later this year alongside the new Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors.
