Indie classic Risk of Rain gets comprehensive remake

It is quite common for popular AAA video games to receive remasters at some point down the line, brushing up on gameplay and graphics to make for a modern-feeling package. It is much less common however for 2D pixel-art games to get remastered – but this is exactly what is happening with the 2013 indie classic Risk of Rain.

Making the announcement, the team at Hopoo Games unveiled ‘Risk of Rain Returns’ saying: “Carefully designed, beautifully remastered, and loaded with new ways to play—Risk of Rain is back and better than ever! Dive into the iconic roguelike full of unique loot combinations, entirely new Survivors, overhauled multiplayer, and more!”

For the uninitiated, the original Risk of Rain is a 2D multiplayer action platformer with roguelike elements in which you are stranded on a strange planet where waves of alien monsters randomly spawn and attack you.

Though labeled as a remaster, Risk of Rain Returns seems like much more of a remake, with it featuring:

  • Updated Codebase
  • All Risk of Rain 1 content returning with new HD pixel art
  • Enhanced Audio
  • “Countless” rebalancing and gameplay tweaks
  • New Survivors + Abilities
  • New Items
  • New Enemies
  • New Interactables
  • New Stage Variants
  • Revamped Multiplayer
  • Much more

With Risk of Rain 2 going full 3D with its gameplay, remaking and reimagining the first game such as they are doing with Risk of Rain Returns is both equally interesting and exciting. Hopefully more indie studios follow this path. Risk of Rain Returns will release some time in 2023 for PC and Nintendo Switch.
