OCUK Evolution Wrath System Review (w/ Fury)

Rating: 9.0.

Don't have time to build your own PC? Want a nice compact, good looking system featuring one of the latest AMD Fury graphics cards? The OCUK ‘Evolution Wrath' System might just tickle the taste buds. This system features an Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4.5GHz, Z97 Motherboard, Up to 16GB 2400MHz Memory, Samsung SSD/Seagate HDD/SSHD, OcUK Techlabs AIO Liquid Cooler and an 80+ Gold Rated power supply.

We have reviewed the Sapphire and ASUS R9 Fury cards, and they have scored well in our labs – they outperform the Nvidia GTX980, especially at Ultra HD 4K resolutions. It makes sense to build a high performance system around one of these cards – in the case of our review system – the Sapphire R9 Fury Tri-X OC which runs at faster 1040mhz speeds.

The main page for the Evolution Wrath allows for plenty of customisation. Our particular review configuration is priced at £1,393 inc vat, although the base model is priced at a modest £1,099 inc vat. The Fury GPU is the major cost upgrade, along with a larger mechanical storage drive (from 1TB to 2TB) and a memory upgrade (to 8GB of 2,400mhz).

Overclockers UK have opted to use the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv chassis.

We reviewed this back in June this year, and it scored well in our labs (click HERE). I was surprised how easily the panels disconnect on all sides of this case – you need to pay extra careful attention when moving it, that is for sure.
AS7V1801

The OCUK build is very clean and tidy – aided by the excellent cable routing capabilities of the case itself.

OCUK are using a Superflower power supply in this particular build, alongside the OCUK Techblack AIO liquid cooler. Shame they didn't put some company branding on the top of the AIO mounting block. A quality Z97 Gaming 5 Gigabyte motherboard takes centerstage in the build.
AS7V1812AS7V1816
All of the cables are wired out of sight on the other side of the case. The Samsung Evo 850 SSD is mounted on this side of the case, out of sight.
On this page we present some super high resolution images of the product taken with the Canon 1DX camera and Canon F2.8 24-70mm lens. These will take much longer to open due to the dimensions, especially on slower connections. If you use these pictures on another site or publication, please credit Kitguru.net as the owner/source. AS7V1830The OCUK Evolution Wrath system is formed around the Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard and Intel Core i7 4790k, overclocked to 4.5ghz.
cpuz1cpuz2cpuz3cpuz4gpuz
An overview of the system in CPUz and GPUz. We can see the 4790k is actually overclocked to 4.6ghz, and not 4.5ghz, so we would assume OCUK are using the 4.5ghz as a ‘safe figure' and pushing higher depending on the specific processor.

The R9 Fury GPU is built on the 28nm process and is equipped with 64 ROPS, 224 texture units and 3,584 shaders. The more expensive Fury X has 64 ROPS, 256 Texture units and 4,096 shaders. They both have 4GB of HBM (Hynix) memory across a super wide 4096 bit memory interface. Bandwidth rating for both cards is 512 GB/s.

The Kingston memory is running at 2,400mhz at 11,16,16,36 2T timings.
installed programs
The Windows install is clean, with no crapware or bloatware installed. Full marks for this as many system builders do install specific anti virus clients – which we don't like to see. We want to choose our own software to install.

We are featuring results today with an Asus PQ321QE Ultra HD 4K screen running at 1440p and Ultra HD 4k resolutions.

Room ambient was held at 23c throughout testing.

The Samsung 850 EVO scores as we would expect – well in excess of 500 MB/s in both the sequential read and write tests. The hard drive scores quite badly in CrystalDiskMark, but we will verify with ATTO Disk Benchmark.
attossdatto hdd
ATTO indicates much better performance from the mechanical hard drive, peaking at around 190 MB/s in both read and write tests.
To test USB 3.0 performance we need a drive that is capable of completely saturating the bus. Until recently we used the Corsair Voyager GTX drive, one of the fastest pen drives on the market. We have recently switched to using a 500GB Brinell Drive, available on Amazon for around £250 inc vat. Inside is a 500GB SAMSUNG EVO 840 SSD, a product all our readers are familiar with.
brinell drive
We have not reviewed this product, but it is one of the fastest external SSD products you can buy, and is self powered from the USB 3.0 port.

Superb results in ATTO as well, peaking between 450 MB/s and 460 MB/s.

Tomb Raider received much acclaim from critics, who praised the graphics, the gameplay and Camilla Luddington’s performance as Lara with many critics agreeing that the game is a solid and much needed reboot of the franchise. Much criticism went to the addition of the multiplayer which many felt was unnecessary. Ultra HD 4K is a demanding resolution, and it is even more so due to the highest image quality settings we have selected. Dropping the image quality a little to ULTRA settings would help improve the minimum frame rate significantly.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Polish: Wiedźmin 3: Dziki Gon) is an action role-playing video game set in an open world environment, developed by Polish video game developer CD Projekt RED. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt concludes the story of the witcher Geralt of Rivia, the series’ protagonist, whose story to date has been covered in the previous versions. Continuing from The Witcher 2, the ones who sought to use Geralt are now gone. Geralt seeks to move on with his own life, embarking on a new and personal mission whilst the world order itself is coming to a change.

Geralt’s new mission comes in dark times as the mysterious and otherworldly army known as the Wild Hunt invades the Northern Kingdoms, leaving only blood soaked earth and fiery ruin in its wake; and it seems the Witcher is the key to stopping their cataclysmic rampage. (Wikipedia).

witcher 3 save games
I have played The Witcher 3 for around 85 hours and I have completed the single player campaign. I tested the game today by playing 4 different save game stages for 5 minutes each, then averaging the frame rate results for a real world indication of performance – one of the map sections we tested is one of the most demanding in the game and our results can be considered strictly ‘worst case'. The Witcher 3 is a dynamic world, so it is important to run tests multiple times to remove any discrepancies.

Players complete missions—linear scenarios with set objectives—to progress through the story.

Outside of missions, players can freely roam the open world. Composed of the San Andreas open countryside area and the fictional city of Los Santos, the world of Grand Theft Auto V is much larger in area than earlier entries in the series.

The world may be fully explored from the beginning of the game without restrictions, although story progress unlocks more gameplay content. (Wikipedia).

Smooth results, holding close to, or above 40 frames per second at all times. Reducing some of the more intensive image quality settings would help improve the minimum frame rate.
Grand Theft Auto V is an action-adventure game played from either a first-person or third-person view.

We maximised every slider – FXAA was enabled, although we left all other Anti Aliasing settings disabled – based on reader feedback from previous reviews. ‘Ignore Suggested Limits’ was turned ‘ON’.

A little too demanding at 4K, although dropping some of the image quality settings again would help increase the overall frame rate, smoothing the engine out noticeably.

Dropping some of the settings helps to keep frame rates in the playable zone, averaging almost 50 fps.The tests were performed in a controlled air conditioned room with temperatures maintained at a constant 23c – a comfortable environment for the majority of people reading this. Idle temperatures were measured after sitting at the desktop for 30 minutes. Load measurements were acquired by playing Tomb Raider 2014 for 60 minutes and measuring the peak temperature.
tmeps
The system cooling works very well, holding temperatures within specification.
We measure from a distance of around 1 meter from the closed chassis and 4 foot from the ground to mirror a real world situation. Ambient noise in the room measures close to the limits of our sound meter at 28dBa.

Why do this? Well this means we can eliminate secondary noise pollution in the test room and concentrate on only the video card. It also brings us slightly closer to industry standards, such as DIN 45635.

KitGuru noise guide

10dBA – Normal Breathing/Rustling Leaves
20-25dBA – Whisper
30dBA – High Quality Computer fan
40dBA – A Bubbling Brook, or a Refrigerator
50dBA – Normal Conversation
60dBA – Laughter
70dBA – Vacuum Cleaner or Hairdryer
80dBA – City Traffic or a Garbage Disposal
90dBA – Motorcycle or Lawnmower
100dBA – MP3 player at maximum output
110dBA – Orchestra

The OCUK Evolution Wrath is generally inaudible, it is only under heavy extended load that the fans on the GPU and CPU spin up. Even at full load, it is never too intrusive. Certainly not a ‘silent' system build, but the noise levels are generally very modest. We test power consumption at the socket with a calibrated meter under the following conditions.

1: when idle
2: running Tomb Raider at Ultra HD 4K with ‘ultimate' image quality settings.

The monitor is not factored into the power draw, just the demand via the system power supply.
power consumption
Power consumption falls in line with what we would expect from a system featuring an overclocked 4790k and Fury graphics card – it demands around 350 watts under full load.
The Overclockers UK Evolution Wrath is a very powerful gaming system that can also handle a myriad of semi professional tasks thanks to the highly overclocked state of the Core i7 4790k processor.

It is reassuring to see that OCUK haven't dropped the ball in regards to selecting high grade partnering hardware. The system is built around the very capable Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard which proved rock stable in our labs throughout a full week of stress testing. Even though we tried creating unstable situations by running Prime and Furmark simultaneously for a full 24 hours, the system didn't crash – a synthetic stress situation which would never be inflicted on the system under real world conditions.

We have already reviewed the Sapphire Tri-X R9 Fury graphics card and it earned one of KitGuru's highest awards. Performance at 1440p is excellent and if you are in the market for a Ultra HD 4K monitor then the system can deliver a very good experience. It is true that it will take two high end graphics cards to truly deliver a super smooth 4K gaming experience with the highest image quality settings in many of the latest game engines, but it is certainly a great foundation to build upon.

OCUK have incorporated a fast Samsung 850 EVO drive to handle boot and OS duties, alongside a 2TB HDD for storage. The 8GB of 2,400mhz DDR3 memory will be fine for gamers but if you have the need to handle more serious tasks such as 3D rendering or video encoding then the  upgrade to 16GB seems like a wise move – it is only £50 extra.

If you are in the market for a new gaming rig and are busy with work and unable to dedicate the time for the building phase then the OCUK Evolution Wrath is undoubtedly a great investment. The component selection is stellar and the build quality is top drawer.

We would consider upgrading the boot SSD to a slightly larger capacity – 120GB may not be enough long term. Thankfully the upgrade to a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO is only £20 extra.
