Sony is expanding its AI‑guided upscaling efforts beyond the PS5 Pro. The company has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a streamlined version of PSSR designed to run efficiently on the standard PS5.
QSSR is described as a new performance tier of Sony’s existing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology. Built through the company’s Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD, QSSR uses a streamlined neural network and a hand‑tuned implementation to deliver improved image detail and stability within the PS5’s hardware limits. PSSR remains exclusive to PS5 Pro, but QSSR aims to bring some of its benefits to the wider install base.
The first games to support QSSR are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, both receiving patches today that add the feature as an optional graphics mode on PS5. Sony says the QSSR library will be available to all PlayStation developers, so more titles are expected to adopt it over time.
Sony also shared comments from Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch, both highlighting the practical benefits of QSSR on PS5. Insomniac says the upscaler brings “more pixel‑level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine, helping resolve fine detail across dense city scenes. Sucker Punch notes that QSSR delivers “a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the [standard] PS5 console until now”, improving how characters and environments hold together during motion.
KitGuru Says: QSSR looks like a sensible way to bring some of the PSSR experience to PS5 owners who haven’t upgraded to a Pro. We’ll have to see how widely developers adopt it and how much visual improvement it delivers in practice.
