Activision confirms Call of Duty skipping Xbox One and PS4 this year

Right up until Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in 2025, Activision has continued to support last-generation consoles, bringing new titles to Xbox One and PS4 systems well into the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 lifecycle. That is finally going to change this year. 

In recent days, a rumour has begun doing the rounds claiming that this year's Call of Duty game is in active development for PS4 and other last-gen consoles. In a rare move, Activision addressed the rumour head-on in a social media post, saying that “the next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4”.

Considering Call of Duty has continued to ship on PS4 up to this point, it wouldn't be crazy to guess that this year's title would also come to last-gen consoles. However, Activision appears to want to make it clear that this will not be the case this year.

Activision might be banking on the fact that a large chunk of PS4 owners are now going to upgrade to PS5 specifically for Grand Theft Auto 6. The game has the potential to greatly expand the current-gen console userbase, to a point where last-gen versions of games are no longer necessary.

Not much is known about Call of Duty 2026 at this point, but this year's release is expected to be developed by Infinity Ward, giving Treyarch and the Black Ops series a much-needed break.
