Activision confirms DMZ extraction mode won’t return in Modern Warfare 3

Last year with the launch of Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward presented us with its take on the emerging ‘extraction shooter' genre with DMZ. Now one year on, support for the mode is being dropped.

As part of a new roadmap post for Modern Warfare 3's first season and content update plans, it has been confirmed that DMZ will not be getting any further updates. The content currently available within DMZ, including the currently in-game maps and missions, will continue to be accessible via COD HQ, or within Modern Warfare 2. However, the mode will not be carrying forward into the next version of Call of Duty Warzone, or Modern Warfare 3.

There will be no further content updates for DMZ and any progress made in the mode will not count towards Modern Warfare 3's battle pass.

Of course, this does not necessarily mean the end of an extraction mode within Call of Duty. Prior to Call of Duty Warzone, Treyarch experimented with its own battle royale mode called Blackout. We could see a similar situation here, where the developers take note of what worked with DMZ and then bring a similar mode back with all the improvements in place.

KitGuru Says: While initially billed as an alternative to games like Escape from Tarkov, DMZ just didn't have enough action and often felt quite empty. Still, I would like to see an improved, similar mode return in a future COD game at some point down the line, especially if we can get a similar leap to the one we had from Blackout to Warzone.
