Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake will not include ‘modern-day’ storyline

When Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag first launched more than a decade ago, Ubisoft was still mixing in ‘modern day' story elements into the Assassin's Creed games. Since then, this portion of the series' storytelling has been dropped almost entirely. Now with the Black Flag Remake coming up, Ubisoft has confirmed that it has removed all of the ‘modern day' scenes.

While Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is billed as a ‘faithful remake' it will have at least one major story change compared to the original. The modern-day sequences from the original release will not return in the remake.

Speaking on the decision, Black Flag Resynced creative director, Paul Fu, told VGC that this was done to avoid confusing newer fans who aren't familiar with the older titles and their modern-day plotlines. They felt that it would be ‘jarring' to keep those sequences in when current Assassin's Creed titles don't touch on the ‘modern' timeline at all.

In the original version of Black Flag, the modern-day scenario had players taking on the role of a producer for Abstergo Entertainment, researching the pirate Edward Kenway for an upcoming movie. In all honesty, it didn't add much and wasn't all that memorable, so leaving this side story on the cutting room floor makes sense. The modern-day sequences from Black Flag onwards were not nearly as memorable or as important to the overall story compared to the modern-day story line from the first three games.
