Avowed devs reworked combat after gameplay reveal feedback

Last year during the Xbox Games Showcase, we got our first look at Avowed gameplay. Unfortunately, the game was still in rough shape at the time, so fans were unimpressed by the game's combat. Obsidian took that feedback seriously last year and has now reworked the combat ahead of the game's planned 2024 release.

Avowed is due to come out later this year, although Obsidian and Microsoft have yet to confirm an exact release date. Following on from The Outer Worlds, Avowed is a similar RPG in terms of scope, so expect a 20 to 30 hour experience with a diverse cast of characters and areas to explore.

Speaking with Windows Central, Avowed gameplay director, Gabe Paramo, discussed the changes made to Avowed's combat system after last year's gameplay reveal. According to Paramo, the feedback had Obsidian taking a step back to address positioning, combat poses, VFX and SFX feedback and more to make the combat feel more impactful.

Avowed did get a new trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase in June, but it is a story-focused trailer that uses in-game footage, so there are too many jumps and cuts to really get a feel for these new gameplay changes. With the game due to release sometime in the next few months, that should change soon.

KitGuru Says: With Avowed being one of Xbox's featured titles at Gamescom in August, I would expect to hear more news on the game and its release date around that same time.
