Final Fantasy XIV PS5 version in open beta with new graphics and performance modes

We learned back in February that Final Fantasy XIV would be getting a free update to take advantage of the PlayStation 5's more powerful hardware. Now, the PS5 version of the MMO is in open beta, complete with new visual enhancements and smoother frame rates.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Square Enix's Matt HIlton detailed the PS5 enhancements for Final Fantasy XIV, including 4K, 1440p and 1080p resolution modes. When running at 1440p or 1080p, the game will run at 60 frames per second. The 4K mode also has an uncapped frame rate, but the publisher admits that it won't reach 60 frames per second at all times.

Instead, PS5 owners should expect closer to a 40 FPS average when running the game in 4K, which is still an improvement over the PS4 version, but is not ideal for those who don't have a FreeSync capable TV, as screen tearing and frame pacing issues can be more noticeable. Still, this is an open beta, so perhaps a frame cap option will be added in the final release.

Final Fantasy XIV's PS5 upgrade comes ahead of the game's next expansion “Endwalker”, which is due to release later this year. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.
