Overwatch 2 hits 35 million players in first month

Blizzard made the controversial choice last month to depreciate the original Overwatch, completely replacing it with the free-to-play Overwatch 2. While opinions on the game itself remain mixed, Overwatch 2 has had an impressive first month commercially, with more than 35 million players flocking to the game.

As part of Activision Blizzard’s most recent quarterly earnings report, the publisher offered its first update on the sales performance of Overwatch 2 revealing that since its launch on the 4th of October, the game has amassed an audience of more than 35 million players.

According to the publisher, 25 million players joined the game during its first 10 days, with the remaining 10 million being added in the weeks since. This is especially impressive when considering the fact that Overwatch 2 suffered from some rather significant launch issues.

Activision Blizzard also revealed that quite a large portion of Overwatch 2’s player base are new to the series – indicating that the game has plenty of growth potential.

Offering additional comments, the publisher claimed that average daily player numbers for Overwatch 2 is more than double that of the first game during a similar timeframe, with the publisher saying “Player investment is also off to a strong start, positioning the title to be a meaningful contributor to Blizzard's business in the fourth quarter.”

As impressive as this first month may be, Blizzard needs to right many of the game’s wrongs in order to ensure that Overwatch 2 has a healthy life ahead of it.
