Overwatch 2’s PvE Missions may also be cancelled

Overwatch 2 has not had the best trajectory since its launch, with the free-to-play title losing many of its promised features over time. Following the announcement last year that one of the game’s primary selling points – its PvE campaign – was cancelled, its replacement is now reportedly also on the chopping block,

Back in May of last year, Blizzard announced that their long-promised PvE campaign mode for Overwatch 2 would not be coming out. While disappointing, the team attempted to quell concerns by announcing a replacement in the form of PvE Story Missions.

The first set of these missions dropped in August last year and since then we have not gotten any more. According to Kotaku, these missions might also now be on the verge of cancellation, with former Blizzard devs saying to the publication:

“You had designers, programmers, artists, QA, all disciplines, on the team constantly making suggestions and ideas to improve, or trying to do the best we could. But it was all either shot down by a few gatekeepers or just ‘there was no point, there was no time.’”

They continued, “Almost every single team town-hall there were questions about ‘what do we do if it doesn't succeed? I don't feel confident that it will perform well. What are we going to do about players being disappointed?' It was met with either ‘don't worry about it. It'll be fine. We have so much confidence in it. Trust us.’”

The interview lends increasing pessimism to the notion of PvE ever becoming a true and recognised reality for Overwatch 2. Hopefully that isn’t the case.
