Xbox exclusive ‘Fable’ completely restarts development, claims rumour

For the past many years, Microsoft has been somewhat known as the company which announces many games, yet somehow they seemingly are unable to get these titles past the finish line. Following developmental issues with Perfect Dark, Everwild and more, it appears as though the much-anticipated Fable has been completely scrapped, with the team starting from scratch on a whole new engine.

In response to a tweet by industry journalist Jason Schreier who discussed the lengthy development times of modern video games, VGC’s Andy Robinson chimed in by claiming that “Fable might just make it out before the end of this gen” – suggesting that the game is further behind in development than some had hoped.

Following this, additional details were shared by Xbox-focused ‘Idle Sloth’, the rumours of which are claiming that Fable has been wholly restarted internally, as “the most current build of the new fable was deemed ‘unplayable’ by most of the team.”

As part of this, the team at Playground Games are supposedly switching the project from their own Forzatech engine to the much more ubiquitous Unreal Engine (though we do not know whether it is Unreal 4 or 5).

A few more details were shared, claiming that the Forzatech version of Fable was only a quarter of the way done, meaning the game was still a long way away even before the reboot. That said, internally the target release for this new Unreal version of Fable is supposedly Q4 2024 – though it would not be surprising in the least to see that pushed much further back.

Of course, as this is a rumour, it should be taken with a pinch of salt. Still, it seems as though unfortunately another Xbox title is struggling to get out the door.
