MSI chose Meltdown London to launch its GE62 Apache mid-range gaming laptop. Meltdown London is part of a chain of converted pubs across Europe, that have been filled with PCs instead of bar stools and large screens carrying streams instead of Sky Sports. Leo Waldock tracked down MSI’s Kian Salehi for a one on one in a very crowded main bar.
The MSI GE62 itself is powered by Intel’s latest Core i7 4720HQ processor with 6MB of cache a base frequency of 2.6GHz and a maximum rated Turbo Boost of 3.6GHz. It has 4 full cores and can process 8 threads – and all with a TDP of just 47w. Although armed with Intel HD 4600 graphics in the CPU itself, MSI has chosen the nVidia GTX965M GPU to deliver the in-game action.
This is a 28nm DX11 part based on the multi-award winning Maxwell architecture and it offers a 924MHz clock before tweaking. nVidia claim that this new part will give levels of performance that are similar to the previous GTX 870M. It also claims to have an improved video engine with updated encode/decode capabilities for H.265 and it can use up to 4GB of GDDR5.

MSI is taking no chances with the cooling and it comes with Cooler Boost 3 – which uses a dual exhaust cooling system with a turbo fan option for when things get heated in battle.
The SteelSeries keyboard and Dynaudio are what we have come to expect from MSI gaming systems and the GE62 can suport up to 2 external monitors alongside the in-built 15.6″ full HD eDP wide viewing angle display (1920×1080).
