Call of Duty 2025 will reportedly still support last-gen consoles

As with many annual video game franchises, Call of Duty is typically quite wary of jumping into a brand new console generation, with the company instead opting to go the cross-gen route for many years following a system’s release. It seems nothing is changing in this regard with the PS4 and Xbox One, as this year’s upcoming Call of Duty will reportedly still launch on last-gen.

As reported by known COD insider CharlieIntel, the upcoming Call of Duty for 2025 (rumoured to be a sequel to Black Ops 2) “could still release on PS4 and Xbox One, per sources.”

If true, this would mark the 6th COD title to release on last-gen machines since the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Cold War; Vanguard; MWII; MWIII and Black Ops 6 all being cross-gen titles.

Call of Duty Last-gen

While Call of Duty has operated within its well-trodden formula for a while now, many outdated design decisions in Black Ops 6 can be attributed to last-gen limitations.

As such, it is somewhat of a shame to see that this year’s entry will likely still launch on the now over a decade old PS4 and Xbox One. Hopefully we do eventually see a couple current-gen exclusive CODs before the launch of the PS6.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
