Sony reveals Project Amethyst, AMD co-developed next-gen AI-enhanced hardware

In a video presentation featuring Mark Cerny, the lead system architect for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony revealed Project Amethyst. This initiative is a collaboration with AMD, leveraging their expertise in RDNA graphics architecture and machine learning to integrate AI into both visuals and gameplay.

Although the video (via The Verge) focused on giving a technical overview of the recently launched PS5 Pro, Cerny talked about other interesting aspects that Sony is working on, namely Project Amethyst. This new project aims to use AI for game development, providing programmers with the tools and resources to create more immersive and engaging experiences. While AMD is already working on FSR 4 (an example of AI usage in improving visuals), Project Amethyst goes beyond that.

Sony envisions AI playing a crucial role in gameplay mechanics, enabling more realistic character interactions, dynamic narratives, and gameplay experiences. Cerny emphasised that Project Amethyst will prioritise efficiency, leveraging Sony's chip design expertise and AMD's RDNA advancements to create an architecture optimised for lightweight neural networks. This will allow developers to integrate AI into their games without compromising performance.

While Project Amethyst is still in its early stages, its potential impact on gaming is immense. Imagine a world where AI characters can engage in dynamic and unscripted conversations, where narratives evolve based on player choices and gameplay experiences are tailored to individual playstyles. Those are just a few examples of what Project Amethyst can do.

It's also worth noting that Sony doesn't plan to limit this technology to PlayStation platforms. In fact, it's already being designed to work across various devices, meaning we should see PC, mobile, Nintendo, and Xbox games leverage this technology.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
