Sony begins PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations

Sony has always been aware of its historical legacy, with the PlayStation maker consistently celebrating its milestone anniversaries in a pretty big way. With 2024 marking the 30th birthday of the original PlayStation, Sony has begun to roll out its anniversary plans.

Taking to the PlayStation Blog, Isabelle Tomatis – the Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment – said “While PlayStation’s 30th anniversary is still a few months away, today we’re delighted to share some of the ways we’ll be commemorating this milestone with all of you.”

They continued, “Explore a nostalgic homage to the original Gran Turismo, enjoy digital soundtracks from classic PlayStation games, and create fun moments with our new ‘Shapes of Play’ collection – these are just a few of the ways we’re inviting you to join our community celebration, which starts this month.”

While the full suite of plans have not yet been detailed, some of the upcoming promotions to go alongside the anniversary include:

  • Free Gran Turismo 7 trial
  • Classic soundtracks coming to music streaming services
  • Shapes of Play product collection
  • Free online multiplayer weekend and esports tournaments

As stated, “these upcoming activities and releases are just a taste of what’s to come”. In the past, we have seen Sony release the likes of classic PlayStation themes and even custom limited edition consoles to mark such anniversary milestones. Hopefully we get something similar for the brand’s 30th birthday.

Insider claims Call of Duty could see a massive shake-up including no more annual releases

For pretty much its entire existence, Call of Duty has operated using a familiar model, with the FPS franchise seeing a brand new title released on an annual basis from one of the 3 core COD studios. While this has worked in the past, Black Ops 7 seems to have been a breaking point for some. According to known insiders, Microsoft is now considering a major shake-up, including a standalone Zombies game.
