Obsidian reveal a bunch of new Avowed details

Following the most recent showing at Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase, we have seen and heard a great deal more about Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming RPG Avowed – including discussions on the game’s tone, length, companions and more.

In an interview with GameInformer, Carrie Patel – the game director for Avowed – sat down to discuss a range of topics pertaining to Avowed. Being an Obsidian RPG, Patel was asked about Avowed’s breadth of choices and consequences – with them responding:

“There are choices that you're going to make that are going to have immediate effects, choices that you'll make that will have effects that you'll see maybe hours later, and some that you'll make that you'll come to see at the very end of the game, kind of how those play out further on into the future. But along with that, you've got choices that are very intimate and impactful for specific characters, and some that really affect the state of entire settlements of the Living Lands and the Living Lands at large.”

Unlike most RPGs of this style, there are no romancable companions, with Patel explaining this decision as follows: “I think if you're going to invest in romance, everyone who's writing them needs to be absolutely, fully bought in. And the other thing you need to do is make sure that if you're going to provide that path, that you're balancing that with an equally meaningful and well-developed, non-romantic path.”

Due to the setting of Avowed, immediate comparisons were made between the game and Bethesda’s Skyrim. Pushing back on this, Patel claimed “I think the best comparison is The Outer Worlds. I think that gives a much clearer idea of the scope of the game and also the design and layout. Like The Outer Worlds, Avowed has a series of open zones that are connected and unlock over the course of the game, rather than one giant map that you can walk through from beginning to end.”

Finally, just like The Outer Worlds, Avowed is expected to take players around 15-40 hours to complete depending on how you choose to play.

While Avowed may not wind up being the game many expected it to be, Obsidian’s track record speaks for itself, and so hopefully the game is embraced by fans when it launches later this year.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
