Nintendo’s big Direct finale was yet another Mario remaster

Nintendo likes to end each Direct with a ‘one more thing' announcement. This year's September Direct featured a heavy dose of Mario already, so the reveal of a Paper Mario remaster to cap off the stream was certainly underwhelming.

Today's Nintendo Direct stream had a few surprise announcements but the first-party showings primarily focused on Super Mario. Over the next year, Nintendo will be releasing Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the Super Mario RPG remake, new Mario Kart 8 DLC, Princess Peach: Showtime, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and as the final game announced at today's Direct, we're also getting Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remastered next summer.

As you can see from the trailer, this is a recreation of the Game Cube title, but with enhanced graphics to bring it in line with modern Mario titles. There is no release date yet, but this remaster will be arriving sometime in 2024.

Today's Direct was pretty underwhelming on the first-party front, with most announcements being DLC, remasters or spin-offs. I also have to question whether or not Nintendo is over-exposing Mario by releasing so many titles in such a short timeframe. I understand wanting to capitalise on the success of the movie this year, but six Mario games over the course of 9 months does feel excessive.

KitGuru Says: I like Mario games but Nintendo seems to be overdoing it a little. I wish Zelda had received this same level of love during that franchise's recent anniversary, as we still don't have the long-rumoured Wind Waker or Twilight Princess remasters on Switch.
