SteamVR 2.0 has finally arrived

It has been quite a long time since the last SteamVR update but Valve is returning this week with the rollout of SteamVR 2.0. The new update brings several overhauls to the Steam experience in virtual reality as part of an effort to provide a more consistent experience across different devices.

Valve first mentioned SteamVR 2.0 back in 2019 but following the release of Half-Life: Alyx, it seemed that Valve's VR efforts drastically slowed down. Now with the Steam Deck being a huge success, it looks like Valve is turning its attention back towards virtual reality, starting with the long-awaited SteamVR 2.0 update.

The new update brings most of the current features of Steam and the Steam Deck to SteamVR, including a revamped store, a newly upgraded virtual keyboard with dual-cursor typing, support for additional languages, emojis and themes, proper Steam Chat and Voice Chat integration and easy access to Steam notifications.

This update comes at an interesting time, as Valve has been rumoured to be working on a standalone VR headset, similar to the Meta Quest. Perhaps that new hardware is now just around the corner.
