Uncharted film finally gets its first trailer

The Uncharted film has had an extremely troubled development. Announced all the way back in 2008, the film underwent half a dozen director turnovers, complete rewrites and more. Now, we are finally set to see the fruits of all this labour when the Uncharted film releases on the 18th of February – the first trailer of which is now live.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Naughty Dog’s co-president Neil Druckmann introduced the first trailer for the upcoming Uncharted film, saying “Today, we’re humbled and incredibly excited to show you the world premiere of the first official trailer for the much-anticipated Uncharted movie – starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas. In a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment, PlayStation Productions, and Naughty Dog, we captured the spirit, spectacle, and heart that Uncharted is known for (some of you will recognize some of the humor, landmarks, music, and relics).”

The film’s director, Ruben Fleischer, also commented on the film, claiming that he “made the movie for both hardcore fans of the game and those who are not yet familiar with the franchise and believe that both will be equally entertained by this incredibly fun and action-packed film.”

The trailer (seen above), does indeed feature many iconic moments from the game franchise. That being said, it will be interesting to see whether these moments are able to capture the same level of impact that the games did. Furthermore, Tom Holland’s portrayal as a young Nathan Drake will certainly require an adjustment from fans who are so used to the voice and demeanour of Nolan North. Of course, there is no point in pre-judging the film or Holland. We will just have to wait and see when the film releases on the 18th of February.

It tends to take a lot for gamers to 'forgive' a studio after messing up a launch, for instance CD Projekt Red had to spend three additional years developing Cyberpunk 2077 before many were willing to give the game another shot. In the case of Helldivers 2, despite the game having some rough server issues at launch, the game turned out to be so good that many players simply waited things out, without leaving a trail of negative reviews. Now, a case of incredibly poor communication and a poorly thought-out plan from the game's publisher, Sony, has put Helldivers 2 in jeopardy, with the game being removed from over 170 countries.
