God of War Ragnarok sells 15 million copies in first year

During the 2023 Game Awards, Sony Santa Monica and Kratos made a surprising appearance, announcing a free rogue-like DLC in the form of God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla. Alongside the announcement, SSM revealed that the 2022 game has sold an impressive 15 million copies.

Taking to the PlayStation blog to detail the aforementioned free Valhalla DLC, Grace Orlady – Lead Community Manager at Santa Monica Studio – said “As of November 19, God of War Ragnarök has sold through more than 15 million units worldwide across PS4 and PS5”. Orlando then went on to explore and discuss the upcoming Valhalla DLC.

God of War Ragnarök first launched on the 9th of November 2022, meaning it managed to shift over 15 million copies in one year alone. For comparison, 2018’s God of War sold 10 million copies by May 2019, meaning Ragnarök has managed to surpass it by 50% within the same timed period.

Of course, it still has a little ways to go to match 2018’s lifetime sales (with it having sold a total of 23 million copies by November 2022) but considering just how rapidly it reached 15 million – and the fact that it is getting free DLC – it likely won’t be long before Ragnarök becomes the best selling entry in the series.
