The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a GOTY contender

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is due to release tomorrow. Ahead of the launch, the first wave of reviews for the game have gone live today, garnering an overwhelmingly positive reception.

Much like its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom is launching to glowing praise from critics, garnering a 98 overall rating on Open Critic and a 97 overall rating on Metacritic. If the current scores hold in place, then Tears of the Kingdom will have matched Breath of the Wild's Metacritic score and over on Open Critic, it would be the highest-rated game of all time, tied with Super Mario Odyssey.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild. This time around, Link will have new powers and abilities. The Hyrule map has also been split between large areas on the ground, in addition to massive floating islands in the sky that need to be explored.

So far, reviewers seem to be impressed by the game's scale, Link's new suite of abilities and the new structure of the game, which includes the return of dungeons, which were absent in Breath of the Wild.
