EVO 2022 will be in-person once again

EVO is one of the biggest gaming events around, serving as the primary fighting game tournament championship, featuring esports, game announcements and more. Due to COVID-19, the event was formatted digitally this year. Following the conclusion of EVO 2021, it was announced that next year’s championship series will return to being in-person.

EVO 2021 recently concluded, having taken place from the 6-8th of August, and the 13th to the 15th. In the wake of its end, the official EVO team took to Twitter to announce that “Evo is back in Las Vegas August 5-7 in 2022.”

Adding to this, they said “We have loved the competition through our online events, but nothing beats live, in-person tournaments between players from around the world. It has been too long since we have experienced the spirit of the FGC [fighting game community] in person together.”

EVO is an annual fighting game event which benefits greatly from being in person. Fighting games rely heavily on frame-perfect movement and as such, online infrastructures cannot compare. Rollback net code has helped in this respect, though with not every game offering robust online connections, 2021’s game line-up was undoubtedly affected.

It is therefore exciting to see EVO return to being in-person next year. Hopefully the two year absence will help to reinvigorate the players and the audience, making the show bigger and better than ever.
